I Believe

by Don Chisholm

I believe in reincarnation. Everything in the universe is evolving, and we choose to return to this world to learn whatever lessons are necessary to move on to the next level. It's like going to school. We start in Grade 1 and finish in Grade 12. Thing is, I don't know which grade I'm in. Sometimes I think it must be Grade 6; other times I know it's Grade 2. Either way, I'll be in school for a while. I don't know what happens after Grade 12. Maybe we become angels.

I believe in Karma, the law of cause and effect. We're accountable for all our actions. If I do anything to harm you, then I'll get it back. Maybe not from you, but it will come back. It's the immutable law of Nature. I can't hire a good lawyer and get off on a technicality, like I might under the laws of our land. There's no escape; I pay the piper.

Of course, there's a flip side to this Karma thing. If I do anything to help you, then I'll get this back too. Hey, perhaps it isn't so bad after all. If I play my cards right, I may be able to get a lot of good stuff coming my way. Sure is something to think about before I steal your graphics.

I believe in "live and let live." What seems to be right for me may not be right for you. I have no right to assume my way is the only way or to give you advice, unless you ask for it. You have your lessons to learn; I have mine. We're all headed for the top of the mountain, though we may be on different paths. Some paths may be easier than others, but the view from the top is the same, no matter how we get there.

I believe we're special. We each have a role to play in the evolution of this universe, and every role is unique and important. If someone seems wiser or wealthier, it may have to do with a lesson he's come here to learn. I don't know what my role is, but I'm sure it will be clear one day. Until then, I'll just keep on doing what I'm doing and not worry about it.

I believe "I can!" A wise man in Asia once taught me I can do anything I set my mind to, and I've never forgotten his words. It's really quite simple. "If you want to do something, just start doing it." Don't go looking for problems or things to worry about. Everything you need will come to you when the time is right.

I believe in sharing. It's a great way to make friends, and it's good for my Karma! If I can help you, just ask me. If I need your help, then I'll ask you. I'm not afraid to ask because I see it as a chance for you to earn some brownie points. In a way, I'm doing you a favour. Don't worry, I won't overdo it! I'll never ask for your money or your car.

I believe in happiness. Life is supposed to be fun. It's like a Monopoly game, but sometimes we get too serious. Contrary to what your coach may have taught you, it doesn't matter who wins. Who cares if I have Boardwalk or more hotels. When the game is over, I can't take them with me anyhow. I'd rather have a little fun and do some laughing while we play. This way, I might learn something about you and a little more about me. Maybe this is a lesson I've come here to learn.
